SPECIAL AWARD: Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology Fox Valley Hematology & Oncology, a state-of-the-art cancer care center that opened on the north side of Appleton in September 2015, positioned construction of its 70,000-square-foot facility as a true impetus for change. FVHO's passion for creating a care/treatment destination for patients with cancer and blood disorders drove Miron Construction Co., Inc. and McMahon Architects/Engineers to facilitate an integrated, collaborative design and construction approach, yielding hundreds of patient- centered innovations. Insight Innovation Award judges were impressed with the depth and breadth of analysis that led to a patient-oriented environment and its strong focus on the customer experience, "looking from the oustide in," and that it "addressed needs beyond the patient to include families, care givers and community." e FVHO team developed an "ideal model" that aligned the patient care philosophy, the physical environment, and the operational structure. is model accelerated multiple innovative ideas: A custom- designed chemotherapy chair with full provider access, treatment neighborhoods and the patent- pending concept 360 Degrees of Care. Innovation Teams were created to gain collaborative input on each area of the facility. ese iTeams were composed of patients, staff, physicians and the design and construction team who met regularly to review the current processes and develop depicting the optimum flow. Not only were cycle times understood, but six areas (including the exam rooms, reception areas, and nurse servers) underwent rapid access prototyping, which gave the building owners the opportunity to interact with their designed space before actual construction began. Procedures were documented to best understand existing process flows and flaws. It was important to FVHO that the new center not only enhance the physical environment, but transform the patient experience into a holistic, organic, easy-to-navigate, friendly and upliing experience that provides patients and their families with compassionate support and a vision of recovery. The resulting facility has proven to make a difference in the lives of patients, their families, and their friends.
